Violation of reservation policies in IITs? SC also sought response from the Central Government by sending a notice

The Supreme Court on Wednesday issued notice to the Centre and all Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) on a petition. The petition had sought a direction to follow the reservation policies in admission to research degree programs and recruitment of faculty members.


A bench of Justices L Nageswara Rao, BR Gavai and BV Nagarathna sought response from the Centre and all IITs on a plea alleging that the institutions were not following the reservation policies. Also Read..  The 13th ASEM Summit to be held on 25-26 November

The petition was filed by Sachchida Nand Pandey, who also sought directions to cancel the appointment of non-performing faculty due to violation of reservation norms, formulation of transparent recruitment policy. It has also sought to create a mechanism for redressal of complaints of student/scholarly and research harassment and constitution of a committee of technical experts to review the performance of the existing faculty.

It has been said in the petition that the process of taking admission in research program and appointment of faculty members by IITs is completely unconstitutional, illegal and arbitrary. It has also been said in the petition that IITs are not following the guidelines of reservation as per the constitutional mandate. The petition alleged, "IITs are not following a transparent process in the recruitment of faculty members. It increases the chances of corruption, favouritism and discrimination. Affects the country's internal ranking and technological development.
