At least seven people were killed and 28 others injured when a massive fire broke out on the 18th floor of a multi-storey residential building in central Mumbai's Tardeo area on Saturday morning. Giving information about this, a BMC official said that a fire broke out in the building 'Kamla' located opposite Gandhi Hospital in Gowalia Tank around 7 am, when many people living in it were sleeping.
He said, 'It is a 20-floor building but the fire started on
its 18th floor. At the same time, when the local people told about this
incident, the fire brigade personnel and the police immediately reached the
spot. Several people were injured in the incident and have been taken to
various nearby hospitals.
Four of the six injured, who were taken to Nair Hospital, died
while two others died in two different hospitals - Bhatia Hospital and Kasturba
Hospital, the official said. At present, 13 people are being treated at Bhatia
Hospital, two at Nair Hospital and one at Kasturba Hospital, the official said.
On the other hand, Mumbai Municipal Corporation Mayor and MP Arvind Sawant
announced that Rs 5 lakh will be given to the families of the dead and the
Municipal Corporation will bear the cost of treatment of the injured.

He said that on receiving information, 13 fire tenders and
seven water tankers reached the spot to douse the fire. This fire has been
described as the third level (horrific) fire. It is a matter of relief that at
present the firefighters have brought the fire under control from all sides.
Another official said, "Soon after the fire broke out on
the 18th floor, residents along with their family members started running
outside. There are at least six flats on each floor. The fire engulfed the 18th
and 19th floors and some residents were trapped there. He said that according
to some residents, the power supply to the building was cut off after the fire
broke out. Several residents of the building were sleeping when the fire broke
out.
