External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar, in response to a question posed in the Rajya Sabha, shared the year-wise data of the number of Indian citizens who renounced their Indian citizenship.
The total number of Indians who gave up their Indian citizenship since 2011 comes to 16,63,440.
New Delhi: Over 16 lakh
Indians have renounced their Indian citizenship since 2011, with 2,25,620 doing
so in 2022, the highest during this period, according to government data. This
information was shared by External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar in response to
a question in the Rajya Sabha. The lowest number of Indian citizens renouncing
their citizenship was in 2020, with 85,256 doing so.
The year-wise
breakdown of the number of Indian citizens renouncing their citizenship is as
follows: 1,31,489 in 2015, 1,41,603 in 2016, 1,33,049 in 2017, 1,34,561 in
2018, 1,44,017 in 2019, 85,256 in 2020, and 1,63,370 in 2021. For reference
purposes, the data for 2011 was 1,22,819, while it was 1,20,923 in 2012,
1,31,405 in 2013, and 1,29,328 in 2014. The total number of Indian citizens who
have given up their citizenship since 2011 is 16,63,440.
In response to a specific query, Mr. Jaishankar stated that according to available information, five Indian nationals obtained citizenship of the United Arab Emirates in the last three years. Additionally, he provided a list of 135 countries whose citizenship was acquired by Indians.

Minister of State for External Affairs V Muraleedharan also addressed the issue of professionals being laid off by US companies in recent months. He stated that a certain percentage of those affected is likely to be Indian nationals on H-1B and L1 visas. The government of India has consistently raised this issue with the US government, working with various stakeholders, including industry organizations and business chambers, to address the movement of high-skilled workers, including IT professionals.
In conclusion, the number of Indian citizens renouncing their citizenship has seen a significant increase in recent years, with the highest number of renunciations taking place in 2022. The government of India is aware of this issue and is actively working to address it, including the issue of professionals being laid off by US companies and the movement of high-skilled workers, including IT professionals.
