Today’s History: Establishment of the United Nations today on 24th October.

The United Nations Is an intergovernmental organization aiming to maintain international peace and security, develop friendly relations among nations, achieve international cooperation, and be a center of harmonizing the actions of nations.

After the failure of The League of Nations, established after the 1st world war in 1920, the United Nations was established in 1945 keeping the disaster of the 2nd world war in mind. The representatives of US, British, Soviet, and China met at Dumbarton Oaks in Washington in August and September 1944 to discuss the first Charter of the United Nations with an objective of collective security. Then, representatives of 50 states (countries) had a meeting in San Francisco in the months of April and June with the motive to complete the Charter of the United Nations. The Charter provided for the General Assembly, The Security Council, Economic and Social Council, an International Court of Justice, and the Trusteeship Council. 



On 26th June 1945, the Charter was signed by the 50 member states present in the meeting at San Francisco. And, on 24th October 1945 the United Nations or in other words, the Charter of the United Nations came into force.

The main purposes of the United Nations:

  • To keep pace throughout the world;
  • To develop friendly relations among the nations;
  • To help nations work together to improve the lives of poor people, to conquer hunger, disease and illiteracy, and to encourage respect for each other’s right and freedom;
  • To be a center of harmonizing the actions of nations to achieve these goals.
