The Election Commission has taken a big action against the former Prime Minister of Pakistan, Imran Khan. The Election Commission has disqualified Imran in the Toshakhana case and has also recommended legal action against him. This action has been taken by the commission at a time when the former Prime Minister has announced to take out the independence march in Pakistan. After the action of the Election Commission, Imran Khan will not be able to contest the elections.

In fact, a petition filed by the ruling coalition government's Pakistan Democratic Movement (PDM) lawmakers claimed that cricketer-turned-politician Imran Khan took away most of the goods from Toshakhana without payment. He did not disclose the gifts he allegedly received from himself and concealed the information in his statements.

What was the whole matter?

Imran Khan, who came to power in 2018, received expensive gifts from wealthy Arab rulers during official visits, which were deposited in Toshakhana. Later he bought it at a discounted price as per the relevant laws and sold it at a huge profit. Former Prime Minister Imran told the ECP during the hearing that around Rs 58 lakh was received from the sale of gifts purchased from the state treasury, paying Rs 21.56 crore.

Gifts included an expensive wristwatch, a pair of cufflinks, an expensive pen, a ring, and four Rolex watches. Imran Khan's opponents are claiming that he failed to show the sale in the income tax return. The petition demanded that he be disqualified as a Member of Parliament of Pakistan.

What is the law of Pakistan?

Let us tell you, according to the law of Pakistan, any gift received from dignitaries of a foreign state must be kept in the State Depository or Toshakhana. If the head of state wishes to retain the gift, he must pay an amount equal to its value. This is decided through the process of an auction. These gifts are either stored in the Toshakhana or can be auctioned and the money earned through this is deposited in the national treasury.
