Their victory resulted in a 6-1 demolition of Schalke and lifted them to second place in the league, behind leaders Bayern Munich. The game started off with a bang for Leipzig as Andre Silva opened the scoring in the seventh minute. Just eight minutes later, Benjamin Henrichs added another goal to their lead. Schalke, who won promotion last season, couldn't catch a break as Silva scored his second goal of the evening just before the break and Timo Werner added another in first-half stoppage time.
Schalke tried to mount a comeback in the second half with Soichiro Kozuki scoring in the 56th minute, but Leipzig was relentless and added two more goals late in the game through Dani Olmo in the 83rd and Yussuf Poulsen's curled shot six minutes later.
Leipzig's win puts them on 32 points, just three points behind Bayern Munich who, on 35 points, hosted Cologne later on Tuesday. On the other hand, Schalke's defeat extends their losing streak to 10 out of their last 11 league matches and they currently sit in last place on nine points.
