Amit Zavery, Vice President of Google Cloud, has called on EU antitrust regulators to examine the matter more closely.
Google criticised Microsoft's deals with smaller European cloud vendors (Representatinal)
Brussels, Belgium: Alphabet's
Google Cloud has recently accused Microsoft of anti-competitive cloud computing
practices, specifically criticizing imminent deals with European cloud vendors.
According to Google Cloud Vice President Amit Zavery, these deals do not solve
broader concerns about its licensing terms. Zavery urged EU antitrust
regulators to take a closer look at the issue.
This is the first
time that Google Cloud has made public comments on Microsoft and its EU deals,
highlighting the rivalry between the two U.S. tech giants in the
multi-billion-dollar cloud computing business. Google is currently trailing
market leader Amazon and second-ranked Microsoft.

Zavery specifically called out Microsoft's "anti-competitive posture in cloud," stating that the company is "leveraging a lot of their dominance in the on-premise business as well as Office 365 and Windows to tie Azure and the rest of cloud services and make it hard for customers to have a choice." He added that when Google Cloud talks to customers, they often find that "a lot of these bundling practices, as well as the way they create pricing and licensing restrictions, make it difficult for them to choose other providers."

Zavery also criticized Microsoft's deals with smaller European cloud vendors, which have been offered in an effort to stave off an EU investigation. The deal includes a change in Microsoft's cloud computing practices, which would in turn suspend antitrust complaints from smaller rivals. However, Zavery
believes that these deals do not address the broader concerns about Microsoft's licensing terms.
Google Cloud's criticism of Microsoft highlights the increasing competition within the cloud computing industry, as well as the importance of fair and competitive practices. With the rise of cloud computing and the increasing reliance on technology, it is crucial for companies to ensure that customers have access to a variety of providers and can make informed choices about the services they use.

As the rivalry between Google Cloud and Microsoft continues, it will be interesting to see how these companies respond to each other's criticisms and how the wider cloud computing industry evolves in the coming years. For now, it seems that the issue of anti-competitive practices and fair competition will remain a key concern for regulators and industry players alike.
